The 2009 Import and Export Market for Stripped and Stemmed Tobacco in Eu

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners approaching the market in Europe face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying stripped and stemmed tobacco to Europe? What is the dollar value of these imports? How much do the imports of stripped and stemmed tobacco vary from one country to another in Europe? Do exporters serving the market in Europe have similar market shares across the importing countries? On the supply side, Europe also sells to the international market of stripped and stemmed tobacco. Which countries in Europe supply the most exports of stripped and stemmed tobacco? Which countries are buying their exports? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for stripped and stemmed tobacco in Europe. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics that appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for stripped and stemmed tobacco for those countries serving Europe via exports or supplying from Europe via imports. We do so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models.

The 2009-2014 World Outlook for Tobacco Manufacturing

This econometric study covers the world outlook for tobacco manufacturing across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the 230 countries of the world). This study gives, however, my estimates for the worldwide latent demand, or the P.I.E., for tobacco manufacturing. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the world's regional and national markets. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business.

Tobacco Manufacture

The US tobacco manufacturing industry includes about 80 companies with combined annual revenue of about $40 billion. Major companies include Altria (owner of Philip Morris USA and UST), Lorillard, Reynolds American, and Vector Group. The industry is highly concentrated: the eight largest companies generate more than 90 percent of revenue.COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPEDemand is driven by discretionary consumer spending and awareness of the health effects of smoking. The profitability of individual companies depends on effective marketing. Large companies enjoy economies of scale in manufacturing and in their ability to offer wider ranges of products. Small companies can compete effectively through heavy discounting, through clever branding and packaging, and by exploiting niche categories such as pipe tobacco and additive-free cigarettes. The industry is capital-intensive: average annual revenue per worker is more than $1.5 million.PRODUCTS, OPERATIONS & TECHNOLOGYMajor consumer tobacco products include cigarettes, chewing tobacco and snuff, and cigars. Cigarettes account for more than 80 percent of industry revenue.Tobacco is an annual plant with leaves that are hand- or machine-cut and then cured. Curing removes all moisture from the leaf and enhances flavor. Flue-curing takes about a week; air-curing takes two months. Cured tobacco is cleaned and sorted in tobacco processing plants, where stems are removed in a process called threshing. The tobacco is then re-dried, compressed into boxes or wooden vats, and aged in a warehouse for up to two years. At the cigarette ...

The 2009-2014 Outlook for Filter-Tip Tobacco and Non-Tobacco Cigarettes

This econometric study covers the latent demand outlook for filter-tip tobacco and non-tobacco cigarettes at least 100 millimeters across the states, union territories and cities of India. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across over 5,100 cities in India. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it's state or union territory and of India as a whole is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-a-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each state or union territory and city, latent demand estimates are created for filter-tip tobacco and non-tobacco cigarettes at least 100 millimeters. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.
