Despite overwhelming evidence of tobacco's harmful effects and pressure from anti-smoking advocates, current surveys show that about one-quarter of all adults in the United States are smokers. This audience is the target for a wave of tobacco products and pharmaceuticals that claim to preserve tobacco pleasure while reducing its toxic effects. Clearing the Smoke addresses the problems in evaluating whether such products actually do reduce the health risks of tobacco use. Within the context of regulating such products, the committee explores key questions: - Does the use of such products decrease exposure to harmful substances in tobacco? - Is decreased exposure associated with decreased harm to health? - Are there surrogate indicators of harm that could be measured quickly enough for regulation of these products? - What are the public health implications? This book looks at the types of products that could reduce harm and reviews the available evidence for their impact on various forms of cancer and other major ailments. It also recommends approaches to governing these products and tracking their public health effects. With an attitude of healthy skepticism, Clearing the Smoke will be important to health policy makers, public health officials, medical practitioners, manufacturers and marketers of "reduced-harm" tobacco products, and anyone trying to sort through product claims.

With calls for greater government regulation of tobacco culminating in the historic June 2009 passage of federal antismoking legislation, Tobacco could not be more timely. It is the most authoritative and accessible volume available on the evolution of tobacco consumption as well as efforts to protect consumers from its dangers.Tobacco focuses on five key issues: tobacco excise taxation and health policy; the often misleading advertising of cigarettes and "low tar/nicotine" alternatives; the role of the Food and Drug Administration in regulating tobacco; education and prevention efforts aimed at children and teens; and environmental tobacco health risks, including second hand smoke. It is an eye-opening introduction to the entire history of efforts to regulate tobacco—from its beginnings in the Progressive Era of the early 20th century to recent efforts to uncover suppressed medical reports, ban smoking ads, and get smoking out of the movies.

As the single largest preventable cause of premature death, tobacco use kills hundreds of thousands of people each year. A host of new laws has increased taxes on cigarettes and restricted smoking in public places, and U.S. smoking rates have declined. But nearly one in five adults in the United States still smokes. Despite vigorous criticism from public health advocates and strict limits on advertising and marketing, the tobacco industry continues to promote and profit from its addictive product. Is the tobacco industry responsible for the harm caused by smoking? Should the government regulate tobacco as much as it regulates other drugs? Do tobacco ads manipulate consumers - particularly those at young ages - into adopting a harmful product? "Tobacco Industry and Smoking, Revised Edition" addresses these serious and controversial questions as well as many others that pertain to smoking in the United States. Featuring up-to-date legal and historical overviews, reference resources, statistics, and a research guide, this new book will help readers understand the impact of smoking on their lives and communities. Coverage includes: new scholarship on the history of tobacco use in America; an overview of legal issues related to tobacco use, including recent laws that have increased cigarette taxes and restricted smoking in public places; an examination of current trends, such as the shift in tobacco marketing and sales to Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America; and, excerpts from tobacco-related documents such as the World Health Organization's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date review of epidemiological and experimental (chamber) studies relating tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure to the induction and exacerbation of asthma in children and adults. Particular attention is given to separating out the roles of maternal smoking in pregnancy and post-natal ETS exposure on the induction of asthma. It is at a level equivalent to that in peer-reviewed academic publications. Previous reviews by the California EPA and by Strachan and Cook reach different views as to whether ETS exposure induces asthma or not. The book is aimed at clarifying the situation by more detailed and more up-to-date investigations.
